Just before "Batman", I had the opportunity to work on "The Midnight Sky" movie with other people in the generalist team. The idea, as shown in the before and after GIF, was to enhance or replace the set. I was mainly responsible for the foreground and midground frozen lake and Guy Williams, who was leading the show, was responsible for the background mountain. We had a few scanned assets of ground to play with in the layout stage. But the main difficulty was to create a realistic frozen snow shader that could hold up enough in quality for the closest shot. The whole snow lookdev was done procedurally with a triplanar system in order to plug and play the shader in every scene easily. The displacement quality, along with some SSS, was the key to make it work.
